Background Information: The Boy Scouts Filed for Bankruptcy in the Face of Thousands of Sex Abuse Claims

On February 18, 2020, the Boy Scouts of America announced they are filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

The Delaware filing will help shield the Boy Scouts’ coffers while the organization faces the prospect of compensating hundreds, if not thousands, of alleged sex abuse victims. The national Boy Scouts council has roughly $1.4 billion in assets. The local councils have another $3.3 billion in assets, a Wall Street Journal analysis found in January.

What you need to know as a victim of the Boy Scouts of America:

  • The bankruptcy proceedings will halt all civil litigation against the national council. Instead, any alleged victims — including people who’ve already sued the group — must file a claim with the bankruptcy court.
  • The court has set a deadline by which people must file claims; if you miss that deadline, you could be forever barred from making a sex abuse claim against the Boy Scouts.
  • Compensation from the Boy Scout Sex Abuse Bankruptcy fund is limited and only available to individuals abused by the Boy Scouts.

Get the help that you need in maximizing your compensation before time runs out.
