From Associated Press:

Eleven years after letting Jeffrey Epstein off with a once-secret plea deal, the U.S. government is putting the wealthy sex offender behind bars.

The 66-year-old Epstein pleaded not guilty Monday in his first court appearance following his weekend arrest. He will remain in jail at least until his July 15 bail hearing.

Epstein’s lawyers contend the charges involve allegations that arose in a Florida case more than a decade ago. Epstein struck a secret deal to avoid significant punishment in that case.

From Time:

Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire financier previously convicted as a sex offender, was arrested Saturday on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges over allegations that he paid girls as young as 14 for sex and used them to recruit other young girls between 2002 and 2005.

Epstein, 66, allegedly sought out minors and was aware that many of his victims were under 18 because “in some instances, minor victims expressly told him their age,” prosecutors wrote.

“Moreover, and in order to maintain and increase his supply of victims, Epstein also paid certain of his victims to recruit additional girls to be similarly abused by Epstein,” prosecutors wrote in the indictment. “In this way, Epstein created a vast network of underage victims for him to sexually exploit in locations including New York and Palm Beach.”

From USA Today

He rose to prominence almost two decades ago and is known to have ties to President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton, Kevin Spacey, Victoria’s Secret owner Les Wexner, high-profile lawyer Alan Dershowitz and Great Britain’s Prince Andrew.

Florida court records show that Epstein owns an island in the Virgin Islands and addresses on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, as well as Paris, New Mexico and Palm Beach, according to NBC.

He is accused of luring more than 30 underage girls for sex acts at these properties.

Here’s what to know about billionaire, philanthropist and sex offender Epstein.

From CNBC

A federal judge denied bail to wealthy investor Jeffrey Epstein, citing the potential danger he poses to the public and the risk that Epstein will flee to avoid prosecution for child sex trafficking charges.

Epstein, 66, asked a judge to release him on a bond of as much as $100 million or more, with conditions that would include requiring him to remain in his New York City mansion, with round-the-clock security monitoring, and an electronic trafficking device.

Epstein, a former friend of presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, was arrested on July 6 after a federal grand jury indicted him on a charge of sex trafficking, and one count of conspiring to commit sex trafficking.
