Exactech issued a recall on thousands of medical implant devices. You may be affected by this recall.
Exactech Inc, a manufacturer of medical devices, recently issued a recall for over 140,000 knee and ankle implant devices. The recall includes the Optetrak, Truliant, and Vantage lines of products. These recalled devices have been manufactured since 2004, putting anyone who has received one of these products in nearly the last two decades at risk of being affected. If you were the recipient of an Exactech knee replacement or Exactech ankle replacement, you may be entitled to financial compensation for damages you sustained due to the recalled product. While not every recipient will experience these symptoms, signs you may have been affected by the recalled product include:
- Unusual and persistent pain
- Swelling or redness
- Stiffness of the joint
- Instability
If you received an Exactech knee or ankle implant and are experiencing these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider and then seek representation from Merson Law PLLC by filling out our contact form or calling us at (212) 603-9100. Do not initiate the claims process through Exactech without first consulting a lawyer. A personal injury attorney can help you get more compensation than you would alone.

What You Need to Know If You Suspect You Were Affected by the Exactech Recall
Who is Exactech?
Exactech Inc. is a medical device company based in Florida. They manufacture implants, medical instruments, and other devices for joint replacement. Exactech itself is not a medical care provider, rather they create devices used by surgeons and other medical professionals.
What was the Exactech recall for?
The recall issued by Exactech Inc. was for over 140,000 knee and ankle implant devices, including the Optetrak, Truliant, and Vantage lines of products. The recall includes devices that were implanted into patients as long ago as 2004. The recall was issued because some components of the implants were packaged in ways that were not up to standard. The packaging allowed small amounts of oxygen to enter and permeate the implant. This created a risk for oxidation after the devices were implanted into patients, which can result in early damage to the implant. This was not discovered until after many patients had already undergone replacement surgery using these devices.
What is oxidation?
Oxidation occurs when oxygen reacts with the molecules within a given substance – in this situation, the materials used in your implant. Exposure to too much oxygen can damage these materials, which can cause issues in the longevity and function of your implant. These issues can include:
- Ankle/knee swelling
- Difficulty walking
- Pain in affected areas
- Loss of ability to bear weight
- Scraping, grinding or other noise in the ankle/knee
- Balance and coordination issues
All of these issues can affect the quality of your life and can lead to expensive medical treatments that are not necessarily covered by insurance. To get compensated for these issues and to earn additional compensation for your suffering, contact the attorneys at Merson Law PLLC.

What You Need to Know If You Suspect You Were Affected by the Exactech Recall
Exactech has properly issued its recall and created a department for restitutions. Exactech has its own claims reimbursement department. If you are prompted to call the Exactech-Broadspire Helpline and “initiate the claims process,” you are contacting Exactech to open a claim for compensation. Exactech, and many companies in similar situations, has its own lawyers and their own team that run the claims process. It is in the best interests of Exactech and of this team to “low ball” you, and offer you less money than they may truly owe you for the damages you endured. If you agree to this low amount, more than likely you will not be able to attempt litigation for more. In addition to this, many companies in similar situations have their claimants (you, in this case) sign documents that will legally prohibit you from suing them if something else comes up down the road.
It is in your best interest to contact an attorney before you initiate the claims process. A lawyer can argue for more compensation and help guide you toward the best possible outcome of the claims process. This is why claimants who get a lawyer to represent them on average receive higher payouts than those who do not. Your lawyer may be able to use information that you do not have access to and help you make a better informed decision. Your attorney may determine that it is not in your best interest to contact the helpline at all, or rather have them contact on your behalf.
You can argue for compensation for many different expenses that have resulted (or will result) from your Exactech knee or ankle replacement. These expenses could be things like: Surgery expenses for replacement or removal of the implant Physical therapy and post-operative treatments Lost wages due to time off work for medical appointments related to your implant Remedies for pain and suffering or loss of lifestyle due to symptoms associated with the implant and more In order to argue for adequate compensation for things like these, you will need the assistance of a personal injury attorney.
In addition to retaining the services of an experienced personal injury lawyer, like those at Merson Law, you will need to gather any documentation of your implant and associated appointments, procedures, etc. You will also likely need to get an x-ray prior to finishing your claim or receiving compensation. You should consult your primary care physician about this and any of the symptoms you may be experiencing. If your symptoms are or have been severe, you should consult your doctor before seeking legal assistance. If this is a medical emergency, dial 911 or seek immediate treatment.
