Weinstein is a former film producer, and the co-founder of Miramax and The Weinstein Company.
On May 25, 2018, Weinstein was arrested in New York, charged with rape and other offenses, and released on bail.
The scandal’s impact on powerful men in various industries came to be called the “Weinstein effect“.
Over several decades, Weinstein used his position as a powerful film producer to leverage sexual favors from women who worked for him or sought to star in successful films.
Rumors about his misconduct circulated Hollywood since the mid-to-late nineties, but many actors and other film professionals had either not witnessed this behavior, or felt compelled to keep this knowledge a secret, for fear of losing their jobs.
In February of 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of rape in the third degree and a criminal sexual act. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison. He is currently serving his sentence at Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, New York
Despite having over 80 accusations of sexual assault by victims, Weinstein was only convicted on the one account. Other victims of Harvey Weinstein have filed lawsuits.
In 2022, Weinstein was convicted on an additional 3 counts of rape and sentenced to 16 more years in prison on February 23, 2023.
