For decades, if not longer, the Diocese of Harrisburg has protected over 60 priests credibly accused of sexual assault of children. In recent years, the Diocese has paid out roughly $12 million dollars in a settlement with 106 victims ($114,000 per victim). Many, including other prominent sexual abuse lawyers and journalists, have noted the small payout.
Fearing an onslaught of new claims, on February 19, 2020, The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg filed for Chapter 11 reorganization under the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy code.
The goal of this filing is to prevent the Diocese from incurring an insurmountable debt. Chapter 11 lets the Diocese try to settle claims with existing assets and insurance coverage. This means that there will be a limited fund of money for victims of sexual assault.
The Diocese’s bankruptcy filing will likely set the amount of this fund on May 19, 2020, at a status conference set for 11AM. In addition to this, as a part of the Chapter 11 filing, the US Bankruptcy Court set a hard deadline for claims against the Diocese of Harrisburg for November 13, 2020.
